HISTORY

of akan films industry

The association was engineered by one James Aboagye, a Film Producer and Director, who decided to bring together Co-Producer and Executive Producers he worked with in December 2006. The meeting was held in Kumasi at Hotel De Kingsway. The members were Erasmus Osei Owusu (Osewus Ventures), Thomas Deborah (Pat Thomas Production), Isaac Avorgah (Crystal Movies) and Francis Awuah (Barfour Awuah Production). This meeting took place in January 2007. After a couple of meetings, it was agreed that an association of film producers should be formed. This concept was discussed with Samuel Nyamekye, a renowned filmmaker and CEO of Miracle Films in Kumasi, and he saw it as a good move. An invitation was extended to other filmmakers. Series of meetings continued to take place in Adum, as most of the movie producers were located in Adum, the Central Business District of Kumasi. The initial membership grew to about twenty. Due to traffic congestion in Adum, the meeting location was moved to Bantama in Bricapa Building just adjacent to the Kumasi Cultural Centre southern gate. At this time the association had been joined by other filmmakers. The members at this were Osewus Ventures, Miracle Films, Three Units Media Image, Pat Thomas Production, Barfour Awuah Production, Kingdom Media, Liberty Film, Paykus Ventures, Africa Experts, Innovative Techniks, No Limit Entertainment, B.K Production, Dreamland Production, Crystal Movies, Bernard Appiah Production, Landi Production, My Time Production, Pedro Production, Peace Films, E & E Production and Lady Diana Production. It was then realized that the association had come to stay, so steps were taken to register it to make it legal entity. The association was then registered, christened 'AKAN FILM PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION' to reflect the philosophy of the members. An interim executives were put in place to steer the affairs of the association. Messrs Samuel Nyamekye - President, Kwaku Twumasi - Vice President, James Aboagye - Secretary, Nana Ama Mcbrown - Assistant Secretary, Thomas Debrah - Treasurer, Erasmus Osei Owusu - Financial Secretary, Francis Baffour Awuah - Organiser and Isaac Avorgah - Porter. It’s headquartered in Kumasi, in the same premises with FIPAG, the film producers association of Ghana. The association has choked a lot of successes and has influenced the film industry in Ghana.
