The name of the association AKAN, is a derivative of the Akan group of people in Ghana. The Akan is a group of people found in the middle belt of Ghana, but it also extends to the fringes of other regions.It forms about 60% of the total population of Ghana, and forms the largest ethnic group. Akan is also the generic name for the closely related languages spoken by these people. Examples of languages found in the group include Asante, Akuapim, Akyem, Bono, Nzema, Akyem, Sefwi, Fante and Kwawu, just mention a few.

The language is from the Kwa language spoken widely in West Africa in the olden days. The Language is also spoken in parts of Cote D'Ivore and Togo along the borderlines of these countries. There is also believed to be spoken in Nigeria (Lagos) and Burkina Faso (Ouagadougou) by trading associations. The return of the Liberian refugees in Ghana to Liberia have also taken Akan language with them.

The Akan Film Producers' Association was formed to serve as a catalyst for the promotion of production of movies made in the indigenous African languages especially the Akan language.

The association is duly registered in accordance with the Ghana company laws. It is located in Kumasi, the capital of Ashanti Region.

Baffour Awuah Francis is a movie producer and movie distributor, high esteem and aim in the Akan Movie industry. He has worked in the movie industry for the past 16 years. He started selling music tapes from the 1990s to 2000 and from 2000 switched to modern CD as distributor of music and video CD's and started producing movies in Ghana and in Nigeria from the year 2005. No movie will be sent to a marketer or physical stores but rather online streaming and online stores for downloads.His focus is to bring out the online movies to where it will meets the needs of the societies globally and to the end where the technology will end itself.

His message to entire world is that, he wants to inform all Ghanaians, and global those who are interested and patronizing in the local Movies that all locally made movies has been switched to online which cannot be seen again physical markets as it used to be but rather Online.
